Why Women Should Lift Weights

There is a common misconception amongst us women out there that lifting heavy weights will make us big. This is not so. Physiologically we do not possess enough of the manly stuff (testosterone) to produce muscles of considerable size. In fact, lifting weights will give us a toned and tight looking physique that most cardio-only gym bunnies will be jealous of.

The Facts

What many people do not know is that muscle, unlike fat, is a highly active tissue that eats up calories even when you are sitting still. For every extra pound of muscle you put on, your body uses around 50 extra calories a day (for doing absolutely nothing!). Your basal metabolic rate can also be increased by an average of 15% through regular weight training. Training with weights at least three times a week for around 20 – 40 minutes is enough to build muscle – if you turn your weights session into a circuit with short rest periods (30 – 90 seconds) between exercises, you can torch the body fat in minimum time!

Other Benefits

As well as the new lean look you will soon be showing off, there are many other benefits to weight training. These include a reduced risk of developing osteoporosis, diabetes and some kinds of cancers (including breast cancer), improved balance, co-ordination and posture, a decrease in blood pressure, a lower risk of injury and a stronger, more functional immune system, to name a few! After a good weights session you will be full of energy and raring to go!

By working your muscles you will be burning more calories and you’ll look better – whatever your weight! So, complement your hard work on the cardio machines with a couple of weight training sessions a week and see the changes you never thought possible.

A few good reasons to hit the weights room ladies – see you there!
