How Long Should You Train For?

60 minutes is said to be the optimum time for a training session. Many of us will push on thinking the extra sets and reps will have positive effects. In fact, the hormone cortisol increases during long training sessions which has muscle wasting and testosterone blocking tendencies.

Get A Good Nights Sleep

Sleep is possibly as important as training itself. For those interested in strength gains and bodybuilding, the majority of growth hormone is released during sleep, additionally, lack of sleep leads to lack of co-ordination and loss of strength, both of which can lead to injuries. For optimum training benefit and exercise recovery we all need 7 or 8 hrs every night. This will aid far greater fitness gains and muscle growth. If you work in an industry that means sleep deprivation is a must then it may be worth taking it easy in the gym until you can return to 7 or 8 hours a night

Time Of Day

We have all heard that we should train at specific times of day because they have certain benefits: in the morning as testosterone levels are higher, at lunch as it wakes you up for the afternoon, in the afternoon as your food eaten so far provides energy for your session etc. All have their truths, however, all contradict each other! So which is best?
Actually, simple studies indicate that just picking a daily time and sticking to it is most beneficial. Not only does it ensure it fits your daily routine and lifestyle, it also means most people stick to it!

      Hi Johno.

      Thanks for the question.

Simple advice really: train as hard as you can and keep your goal at the front of your mind. Whenever times get tough, think of your goal, never forget what you want and with a bit of luck you’ll get there.

      Good luck.

      Sean
